A Morning Success Ritual That Built My Business
Nov 28, 2023Recently I was in a meeting when someone mentioned the Miracle Morning, followed by ‘have you tried it?’
Not only had I not tried it, I also had never heard of it. So, off I went to find the Morning Miracle book and give it a read. I already have in place some good practices for healthy deep sleep like not using phones after 7pm ( maximum 8pm) depending on work and using mouth tape and magnesium to aid sleep and correct breathing through the night. So I was intrigued to know more about this success hack for the morning time.
3 pages in I realised Hal Elrod wanted me to get up at 4am to achieve the ‘Miracle Morning’ success stories I was reading so much about. As a mother of a 2 year old, you can imagine my enthusiasm at the though of less sleep. Nevertheless, I continued reading. As I progressed, I read about habit stacking a range of good things in his life SAVERS ritual; Silence (Meditation), Affirmations, Visualisation, Exercise, Reading, Scribing (Journalling). I realised that these are all the things that I continually struggle to fit into my day and yet all the things that I feel I truly needed to feel balanced.
So, I was set; I would try it the next day. Armed with my yoga mat and my journal I headed downstairs at 5am (4am was too much of a push) trying not to wake my 2 year old. I used the down dog app to do a 15 yoga session, then I used my years of on-and-off meditation training to sit in silence for 10 mins, followed by affirmations he recommends in the book and visualisation of my goals. I read about 10 pages of the book I am currently reading ( Sleep Smarter by Shawn Stevenson) and then cracked on with my journal, wrote my notes and planned my day.
I have to admit, having already achieved something 15 short minutes after waking does give you a sense of accomplishment, even if it’s as small as stretching your limbs. I had a clearer idea of what I wanted to do that day and felt settled from having done some meditation.
At 6.40am when my son joined the party I was ready for coffee and breakfast, I felt good, energised and positive. Two weeks in and I am sold, it gives me valuable ‘me time’ that I’m missing as a business owner, mother and wife. I think the sense of accomplishment is the key for me, I’ve already won and it’s not even 7am. On top of that I follow it with my morning routine that was already in place; a nutrition protein packed breakfast and morning sunlight to help my circadian rhythm for good sleep.
I have to say though the caveat is, this might not work for everyone. All my devices are off by very latest 8pm, which means I’m sleepy and ready for bed by 9.30/10pm, so a 5am get up is totally do-able. My son also sleeps through the night which is a super special brucey-bonus which I am forever grateful for. I just wonder how long it would last if a second baby were to be on the horizon? Most likely it would be gone by 2nd baby’s due date!
